Ravi Shankar, one of the greatest exponents of the sitar, is the most popular Indian musician all over the world. Yehudi Menuhin, the world famous violinist, described him as a creative Genius comparable only to Mozart. The melodious strains of Ravi Shankarªs sitar have carried Indian music across the seven seas. He has come to epitomise Indian music and by extension, the ¦Indianª cultural identity in the global consciousness. He is widely acclaimed for his creativity and distinct, unorthodox style of playing the sitar. He also has a command over instruments like the surbahar, been, rabab and sursingar. He also trained under his elder brother, Uday Shankar, who was a dancer of international fame. v Ravi Shankar was born in Benaras, on April 7, 1920. Ravi Shankar began his career in the company of his brother, but later learnt to play the sitar under Allauddin Khan of Maihar of the Senia Gharana. His training under Ustad Allauddin Khan was very strenuous and grueling. Ustad Allaudin Khan would play the sarod while Ravi Shankar played the sitar. Therefore his guru taught him to play the sitar without ever playing it himself!
Living with Allauddin Khan and pursuing his study, Ravi Shankar had to go through a rigorous routine. Since the Ustad was a difficult master, one day he tried to run away from him. However, his friend, Ali Akbar Khan, also the Ustadªs son, brought him back from the station. The next morning when Allauddin Khan heard of Ravi Shankarªs attempt to escape he was so upset that he burst into tears and embraced his pupil.
Ravi Shankar has contributed largely in popularising Indian music abroad. He has raised the standard of Hindustani instrumental music to its present level of structural sophistication, musical expression and public appeal. He is acclaimed around the world for his originality and his improvisation. He broke away from the rigid traditional style and added variations to compositions, new patterns and styles. He has also developed new ragas. He is a master of the dhrupad style on the sitar. He composed the famous patriotic score, Sare Jahan Se Aacha, Hindustan Hamara in January 1945. In May 1967, he founded the Kinnara School of Music in Bombay and Los Angles for the upliftment and promotion of this instrument. George Harrison, of the famous Beatles rock group, is one of his disciples.
Ravi Shankar has received innumerable honors as a as a sitartist,composer and musician. He composed the music for the film Gandhi, which won him an Oscar nomination. He was conferred the Silver Bear, the highest award of the Berlin Film Festival,for his music in the Hindi film Kabuliwala. In 1969, he was cited as ¦Musician of the Yearª by one of the leading journals of the American music industry, Billboard Magazine. He was awarded the Presidential Award in 1962 and 1980, the International Music Council UNESCO Award in 1975 and a fellowship from the Sangeet Natak Academy in 1976.He has composed extensively for ballets and films in India and has written musical scores for foreign films too.
